Optimization of Unfinished Project
Sometimes, you come to a decision to make a site, find keywords, some initial information, but general site’s content is going to come later - for instance in two months. It is obvious, that you’d better spend these two months making some optimization in advance. I’ve heard opinions that such optimization is worthless and even harmful for the future of site, but due to my own experience it helps to make site displayed in SERPs earlier, especially if you make everything wisely, therefore we shall discuss optimization of unfinished projects.
What are the first aims of a search engine, when it starts spidering a site? Inbound links and outbound links are considered too, but what about the index page itself. Search engine is interested in getting the subject and contents of a page, for proper ranking of it’s content in SERPs. Therefore we find out that for creation of initial, let it be “alpha” version of a site, we need some information and strategy to get startet.
Things that are necessary to start building the alpha of your site: site name, site title, site description (about 20 lines will be enough). Suppose work with keywords to do this. It is a must, I mean it’s useless to put index page withou any means mentioned above.
The second thing to consider is future structure of a site. You must have a complete plan of a site before building your alpha, because if you will start to change links, content of that index you put and some other things - current work will appear probably useless.
In case if your future sites shall have some categories - create category pages, give descriptions (about 20 lines again) and put links from index page to categories pages.
Create structure, framework of your site - you will grow site on base of it. After creating structure, check everything using some text editor for spell check, software to check for broken links and validate HTML and scripts on your pages. View it with help of several browsers and if satisfied with result proceed to the very next step.
The next step is optimization itself. What should your site contain in it’s alpha version? It must bring it’s general idea - keywords that will be true as now, so when it will grow. Fill your site with keywords. It is better if you specify just few of them - you will have opportunity to insert additional keywords, when adding other content.
Personally I believe that search engines are suspicious to sites, which have no outgoing links, so I put a couple of them to places I really like - mozilla.org, mozdev.org, linux.org, gnu.org and so on.
The next step supposes work with outbound links. It is your time to show experience and masterpiece in finding quality link partners. But don’t go too enthusiastic - remember about sandbox. Surely you can dive in sandbox and wait untill the site recovers from it, because actually you have time, but I believe that it is much better never to get there.
Proceed with link strategy and wait until general content comes. Don’t publish it all together in high volumes - make it slower waiting untill search spider will index previous dozen and then publish the next.
Following these steps I have made a couple of sites getting displayed in SERPs in a week after official lauch.
