link:
The query [link:] will list webpages that have links to the specified webpage. For instance, [link:www.google.com] will list webpages that have links pointing to the Google homepage. Note there can be no space between the “link:” and the web page url.

related:
The query [related:] will list web pages that are “similar” to a specified web page. For instance, [related:www.google.com] will list web pages that are similar to the Google homepage. Note there can be no space between the “related:” and the web page url.

info:
The query [info:] will present some information that Google has about that web page. For instance, [info:www.google.com] will show information about the Google homepage. Note there can be no space between the “info:” and the web page url.

define:
The query [define:] will provide a definition of the words you enter after it, gathered from various online sources. The definition will be for the entire phrase entered (i.e., it will include all the words in the exact order you typed them).

stocks:
If you begin a query with the [stocks:] operator, Google will treat the rest of the query terms as stock ticker symbols, and will link to a page showing stock information for those symbols. For instance, [stocks: intc yhoo] will show information about Intel and Yahoo. (Note you must type the ticker symbols, not the company name.)

Yahoo Operators

site:
This allows one to find all documents within a particular domain and all it’s subdomains. Very good way to find out if the search engine has found all of you’re pages and indexed them fully.

hostname:
This allows you to find all documents from a particular host only. Example: hostname:toolbar.google.com

link:
This allows one to find documents that link to a particular url. A great way to see if you’re link exchanges are working and showing up.
Example: link:http://www.creativeconfusion.net

url:
This allows you to find a specific document in the Yahoo index.
Example: url:http://www.creativeconfusion.net/search_engines/yahoo-commands.html

inurl:
This will allow you to find a specific keyword as part of indexed urls.
Example: inurl:search_engines

This allows one to find a specific keyword as part of the indexed titles in the Yahoo search engine. Great way of searching for spam.

Optimization for Blogs: Basic Tips

Webmasters, who prefer Wordpress or MovableType have made a choice that makes most of hard changes already done, because both types of these blog platforms give good, very clean code on output, insert right tags, etc. Anyway, there are some tips useful for all blog webmasters:

1. Work on code – try to put text field of each page as higher as you can, though Google confers much importance to the beginning of a page.
2. Rewrite your urls with keyword-rich urls corresponding subject of page.
3. In case if you blog contains several subjects – divide them into categories. This increases relevancy and helps to get better ranking.
4. After creating a blog, check if it is possible to insert different keywords in index template and templates of categories and posts. Being aware of PHP coding, I have made so that title of post, category name, and latest article on index page name are automatically inserted in title tag.
5. Update your blog by schedule. It is better to post once daily, than post seven posts in one day and then leave your blog for a week.

Google is Planning Updates for Blooger.com

In order to ease blogging barier, Google plans to intergrate Blogger.com system with Gmail. They also plan to add native image upload support and enterprise privacy to the system. Moblog users are already using Blogger Mobile added a week ago. Even though Google seems to apply some efforts in improving blogger.com, it still has no usual blog features, for instance trackbacks and categories.

Dodgeball is a small company that help people socialize. Here what actually Dodgeball makes:

You are getting to SomeInterestingPlace and send a message to the Dodgeball. It generates post on blogger.com blog belonging to you and inviting others bloggers to come to you. After this, Google sends Google Maps to all Gmail accounts, which include basic information about that SomeInterestingPlace, which is referred from Google Web Search. Moreover, Google tells everybody social information about people planning to come through Dodgeball data. With help of Okut portrait you receive images of people to come (based on proximity) – thus you can find out who’s coming.

Since Google has released AdSense for feeds there are alot of questions coming from webmasters what platforms do these ads support. It is currently known that Google AdSense is supporting Blogger.com and MT-based blogs. Webmaster have asked when the next AdSense for Feeds version supporting other platforms will be released, but Google didn’t gave any anwer yet.

Google is Releasing a bit of AJAX Code

Google begins releasing a bit of AJAX code, which powers Google Maps and Gmail. A JavaScript implementation is allowing web browser to get XML documents directly from server performing format conversion locally. Doing this way you save time and bandwidth.

About good content

Many of us are using Black Hat SEO, but many of us are having also White Hat SEO sites, or just planning to do so. Why? Because Black Hat SEO sites are dropping out sooner or later. Good sites are dropping out too, but more seldomly, so they allow you to create steady income, even though this income won’t come fast and won’t be so huge, as one can do using the dark side. However, it works and some of my site, decently made years ago are still in SERPs and giving enough money to cover my webhosting, office, tax and some other expenses. I consider this side of my work important - that’s why I’m actually writing this.

According to the guidelines of the majority of search engines - the main goal of a good site is quality, unique content. Surely, one should apply some optimization techniques, but they are probably insignificant. For instance, creating a white site I care only title tags, H1 tags containing probably the same of title tags and that’s it.

Having decided to deal with good content we acquire a problem of content. Many of us are bad writers - our hobby-horse is optimization. And many of us have no idea what to write about, even though we know keywords for future project. I have resolved this problem rewriting articles from other resources in the beginning of my white side career. Again - rewriting, not copying. Moreover, even though a search engine wouldn’t recognize simility of rewritten text with the original one - people will. I had such problem too - after spending a week rewriting articles from site about phones I’ve received a note from webmaster of this site, who noticed my articles in SERPs higher than his own :) He said that he’s going to punish me (I didn’t understood the way he was going to do this), but however. Actually I don’t care such letters, but such letters is a sign that my site is not completely white. After this letter I have started another site and doing in the following way: I open a lot of sites on my new site subject, read articles, spend some time thinking about it and write my own articles based on the idea of those I have read.

The third step of writing content for white sites made my experience. After writing a lot of articles I have finaly felt that I can write ‘em by my own.

How to avoid canards in SEO?

A great piece of our work is reading, researching, testing. Reading takes a lot of time, but since Google has actually hidden all it’s plans from webmasters, the majority of news sources and forums are speaking, respeaking and rerespeaking hackneyed subjects. Though somebody wants to increase their news rating, people start to write senseless “news” full of tips and “know-how’s” they assure you are cool. Experienced webmasters pay no attention to this, but a lot of novice webmasters are spending a lot of valuable time reading this and trying to embody this nonsense in their projects. Here are just a few tips to avoid such things – guess about things you’ve read? Do they seem logical? Do they correspond any technique you have already checked to be working yet? Always discuss such articles on reliable and reputable forums – serious webmasters don’t like to share their secrets, but they will however tell you that it’s nonsense. Use domains and sites specially dedicated for research to try new techniques – don’t ever start doing something you aren’t sure in on working projects. Source For Page Title in SERPs

I have recently noticed that Google gives strange title to one of my sites. Trying to find out wherefrom the title is taken, I’ve searched for the exact title it gave. As things turned out, Google token this title from Dmoz, where my site is listed. However, I decided to check titles of the rest of my sites. Now I know that Google freely takes the title either from title of page, or from Google directory title (which is a copy of Dmoz), or just takes it from META description tag.

Yahoo! Seems taking it from title tag of a page only. I have also noticed that MSN is absolutely accidentally takes title for SERPs. One of my sites appears with keywords from the keywords tag.

Any thoughts?

Link Exchange Basics

In SEO job you sooner or later have to exchange or buy links, unless you have a constant and reliable number of sites, where you can always put links to your new site. I will describe some know-how and rules of link exchange and purchasing strategies.

How to choose right site for exchanging and purchasing links?

Looking for sites to exchange or purchase links from, consider relevancy as the most important criteria. If your site is about apples, one good link from another site about apples will work better than 10 links from sites about anything else. Google pays special attention to this factor. Second thing to look after is site quality. Exchange and purchase links from good sites. Before dealing with a particular site check it for PR, position in SERPs, check whether this site is in search engines’ cache and it’s contents are allowed for indexing. Avoid sites with throng of outbound links. Your link will work better in case if it will be surrounded with relevant text – relevant to anchor text and contents of page of your site, where it links. Google guidelines especially underline that you must stay in a “good company” to be ranked higher and not to get banned.

What link appearance is better for my site?

If you buy or exchange links with a site, request link description option. If it is possible – write a good description containing up to three keywords. Vicinity of such text will boost link significance. It is better to put keywords instead of domain name in anchor text, unless your domain is a combination of keywords. Such method always wins competition. Remember that keywords in anchor text MUST correspond title, description and content of a page you link to.

Yahoo! wins Google at Indexing Blogs

Last Yahoo! search engine updates are very significant for this search engine. SEO research confirms that Yahoo! is now better at indexing blogs than Google and Technorati. While Google is perfectly indexing only large, hourly updated blogs, Yahoo! gives way to all of them, even the smallest ones. Personal blogs updated daily or even weekly find their place in Yahoo! index.
We think that such situation on search engines field is a result of that Google has probably slowed their research in search engine field. According to their news for the last six months or even more, their attention is mostly busy with fighting indecent webmasters, launching Gmail and so on. At the same time Yahoo! has been working on search improvement – an you can already hear about results – this post is a good example. It seemed hardly to believe that somebody can be better than Google at anything.
